Mokena Named Tree City USA for Eighth Time
The village was also one of only 50 towns to receive a growth award from the Arbor Day Foundation.

For the eighth time, Mokena has been designated a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The award is given based on the presence of four standards, according to the Arbor Day Foundation website:
- A tree board or department
- An in-place tree care ordinance
- A community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita
- An Arbor Day observance and proclaimation
Last year, the village planted trees at three schools and commissioned a survey to track trees infected by the emerald ash borer, reports the Chicago Tribune. Mokena was also one of only 50 towns to get a growth award for setting up a tree nursery.
