Mokena Village Board Approves First Sewer Rate Hike Since 2017

Residents who use 8,000 gallons of water will see an increase of $4.80 beginning in August after the City of Chicago increased its rate.

MOKENA, IL — Mokena residents will see a small increase in their water bills later this month after the Village Council approved the first rate hike in six years at its meeting earlier this week.

Assistant Village Manager Greg Anderson said the council approved the increase after discussing the effect the hike would take on residents. He said the average customer who uses 8,000 gallons of water will be an increase of $4.80, which will be seen beginning on residents’ August bills, Anderson said.

The increase will go toward the long-term health of the village’s sewer operating fund, which Anderson said has been decreasing in recent years. Mokena still has among the lowest water rates in the region, Anderson said. The village’s sewer rate will increase from $4.25 per 1,000 gallons to $4.55 per 1,000 gallons beginning in July, Anderson said.
