Our Fallen Hero 5K Scheduled For Saturday
The annual event will benefit United Service Organizations of Illinois.
MOKENA, IL — The eighth annual Our Fallen Hero 5K in Memory of PFC Aaron Toppen is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday at Willowview Park in Mokena. Proceeds from the event will go toward United Service Organizations of Illinois, a non-profit organization that helps American military members stay "connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation," according to the USO of Illinois website.
The Our Fallen Hero 5K will be a chip-timed race on a USATF-certified course through the streets of Mokena, according to a news release by Our Fallen Hero Foundation. Participants can run or walk the race. Pre-registration is $30 for adults and $20 for those under 18, plus a processing fee, according to the event's website. The fee includes a T-shirt, entry into a grand prize raffle for a year's worth of wine from Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant, and post-race refreshments, according to the news release. An awards ceremony following the race is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
Toppen was a Mokena native who served in Afghanistan in 2014. He died while serving there that year.
