Naperville Readers React to Quinn's Cell Phone Driving Ban

Drivers set to face a fee if they're caught talking on a hand-held cell phone.

One hand on the wheel and the other on a cell phone.

It's a scene on Naperville roads that happens daily from Diehl Road to 111th Street, but soon drivers may want to think twice about making a phone call without a hands-free device.

On Friday, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving statewide. Use of hand-held phones is already illegal in construction zones and school zones.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2014, imposes fees starting at $75 for drivers caught gabbing behind the wheel.

We asked Naperville Patch readers about their thoughts on the ban on our Facebook page. Here's what they had to say:

The people in Naperville need to learn how to drive period.! I saw 2 of Naperville's finest pull right in front of an ambulance on Washington and 75th. Sirens as loud as could be! Idiots!! Didn't care. Phone or no phone half these people are still irresponsible. - Laura

Stupid! My kids are more of a distraction! They gonna outlaw them in my backseat as well???Now you're going to have people texting & driving so they don't get caught talking. Brilliant. - Chantel

Cell phone usage while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk. Texting while driving is six times as dangerous. I like safer roads as I, my wife, and our children all use them. If your call is so important that you have to take it while you're in the car, please pull over. - William

Car makers should just make ALL cars have bluetooth. And make that bluetooth automatically connect once yr in the car. They already have phones that automatically txt back a response when driving... "Suzi is driving right now & can't txt you back" - Maureen

Some people are coordinated enough to manage both. I never have been, so never do it. I hope people will abide by the law; I see so many driving and using their phones who make it hard for the rest of us to be safe. - Jody

There is a neat little device...it's called a Bluetooth...get one and stop complaining. - Tracy

Yes and it is despicable. 2 out of 4 thinking yapping on the phone is more important than driving safely. I hate it. Cannot wait for january1. - Judy

Quinn is a jerk, focus on other issues before we're Detroit. - Doug

it is the act of talking that is the distraction......I try not to use it if I don't have to but when I do I forget how I even got up the road. Guess he has to pass something.......... - Kim
