Naperville's Animal Care and Control Now Closed on Sunday

NAPERVILLE, IL — Effective last Sunday, the Naperville Police Department’s Animal Care and Control reduced its hours of operation. The new opening hours are Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The unit was previously open until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and all day on Sunday. However, it is currently staffed by only two Animal Control Officers and one supervisor, who responds to over 4,800 calls for service annually, according to Police Chief Robert Marshall.

“We recently completed a workload assessment for animal control services, and the City is reviewing the data,” Marshall said. “Our Animal Control Officers respond to more than 4,800 calls for service each year, and they are an integral part of the service we provide to this community.”

The Animal Care and Control unit is responsible for rescuing stray, injured, and endangered animals, maintaining animal control and welfare, operating a shelter for stray and non-native/exotic animals, and promoting responsible pet ownership and animal care through education and enforcement.

The police department said the change in hours might not be permanent.

“We’re hopeful that this reduction in operating hours is temporary, but we’re confident that residents’ needs will continue to be addressed in a timely manner,” Marshall said in a statement to the press.

The police department said non-emergency animal calls made to Animal Care and Control during non-working hours will be returned during the unit’s posted operating hours. Residents who have an emergency situation should dial 9-1-1 for immediate police assistance.
