Oswego Toddler Flown to Hospital After Collision Between Van, School Bus

An Oswego toddler seriously injured after the van she was riding in was involved in an accident with an Indian Prairie School District 204 school bus remained hospitalized Tuesday morning, but police did not have any updates on her condition, the  said.

The child was flown to a hospital and was in critical condition Monday afternoon after the accident, police said. 

Naperville police said late Monday that Genevieve Hanson, 36, of Oswego was driving the van south on 248^th Street when she tried to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of her turning left onto Lapp Lane. Hanson entered oncoming traffic in the northbound lane and was hit by the school bus as it was heading north. 

The van rolled after being hit, landing on its roof, and the occupants were stuck inside, Sgt. Lee Martin said. Hanson's 4 ½-year-old son and 23-month-old daughter also were riding in the van, police said. The girl suffered serious injuries and was airlifted from the accident scene to Loyola Medical Center, Martin said.  

District public information officer Janet Buglio confirmed an  bus was involved in an accident Monday morning, but no children were on board because they had just been dropped off at school. Bus driver Ronald Zabilka, 55, of Lemont, sustained non-life-threatening injuries after driving up an embankment, District 204 Director of Operations Karla Zozulia said.

A report of an accident involving the bus and a van at 248th Street and Lapp Lane was called in at 9:02 a.m., Naperville Police Sgt. Gregg Bell said. The van had rolled over and one of the occupants, a toddler, initially was reported to have been ejected from the vehicle, but that was not the case, Bell said Monday afternoon.

The bus driver and remaining vehicle occupants were taken to  with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
