Officer Shoots Dog That Allegedly Charged Him And Chased Children: Naperville Police

The dog survived and no humans were injured, according to police

A Naperville police officer shot a dog as it charged him on Wednesday afternoon, according to a department press release.

On Wednesday around 2:45 p.m., an officer responded to the 5000 block of Christa Drive for multiple reports of two loose dogs that were chasing children as they got off the school bus. The Naperville Sun reported that the two dogs were Rottweilers.

Upon arrival at the scene the officer saw two dogs running toward Naperville Fire Department personnel, who were in the area on an unrelated call. The officer yelled to the firefighters/paramedics to get back in their their vehicle, at which point the dogs charged the officer.

The officer fired his weapon, grazing one dog on its leg.

He said that he feared for his safety and believed that he wouldn't be able to retreat without being attacked. The dogs ran away and were located soon after at their home on the 4100 block of Callery Road.

The dogs’ owner, Karen Wells was cited for allowing the dogs to run at large. She brought the injured dog to a local animal hospital for treatment. No humans were injured in the incident, according to police.
