Old Nichols Library Considers Move To Naper Settlement

A Naperville Monday night open house will present some options for the 119-year-old building.

NAPERVILLE, IL — What's next for Naperville's newest landmark, the old Nichols Library? One of the building's co-owners floated the idea of moving it to Naper Settlement, according to the Daily Herald. It could be moved from its current location on Washington Street.

Since a September vote from city council, it's now considered a landmark, which means special permission from the historic preservation commission is needed to make exterior changes. Two alternative plans have been scrapped, which were to destroy it and salvage the west-facing facade for something else, or move it to a spot near the new Nichols Library.

Those could come up again, along with many more possibilities. Owners have been meeting with city officials to choose a path forward for the building. Naperville's Mayor Steve Chirico told the Herald that "any solution is going to be very complicated."
