Sewer Line Smoke Testing Planned In Naperville; See The Locations

City officials say the non-toxic smoke dissipates rapidly, but residents with respiratory illness may want to take precautions.

hNAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville will begin smoke testing its sanitary sewer lines on June 26. The procedure helps crews check for leaks and spots where storm water can get into the sewer line, a news release said.

During the smoke testing, crews force non-toxic smoke and air through sewer lines. They then watch to see if smoke comes out of the ground, as this could indicate a leak in the sewer line. The process also helps workers see spots where stormwater can get into the sewer lines.

Sewer line leaks can lead to backups and other costly complications, officials said.

Although the smoke is described as "harmless" and able to "dissipate quickly," city officials are advising residents who have respiratory illnesses to take precautions and consider leaving the area until the testing has been finished.

It is unlikely for the smoke to get into a building, per the news release, but such seepage is possible if a building has defective drain traps or plumbing problems. Residents will likely notice smoke coming from their rooftop sewer vent stack.
