NAPERVILLE, IL — Kids in Naperville are counting down the days to Halloween. Though there are no set hours for trick-or-treating in Naperville, the police department recently released suggested hours and safety tips for residents.

Families are encouraged to head out before nightfall and get back home by 8 p.m.

The following tips were suggested to help trick-or-treaters stay safe:

  • Head out in groups and with trustworthy adults
  • Do not enter strangers' homes
  • Avoid homes with registered sex offenders
  • Look both ways when crossing streets
  • Obey traffic signals
  • Avoid running between parked cars
  • Travel with a charged cellphone
  • Wear flame retardant costumes
  • Adults should check Halloween candy
  • Don't wear costumes that include weaponlike accessories
