Excessive Heat Tuesday; Where To Go In New Lenox In An Emergency

NEW LENOX, IL — The first day of summer arrives Tuesday, and with it will come temperatures forecasted close to 100 degrees in New Lenox, according to AccuWeather.

Two cooling centers will be available to New Lenox residents who need an escape from the dangerous heat.

The New Lenox Police Department, 200 Veterans Parkway, and the New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Parkway, are both open for those in need of a place to get cool.

Peak afternoon heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperatures may cause heat-related illness.

Here are some tips from the National Weather Service for staying cool and safe during the excessive heat:

• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Stay in an air-conditioned room.
• Stay out of the sun.
• Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
