Murder Charge For Man, 45, In New Lenox Road Rage Shooting: ISP

A Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder in the incident on I-80 in New Lenox Monday.

NEW LENOX, IL — A Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder in the road rage-related shooting death of a 30-year-old Joliet man in New Lenox.

Illinois State Police said Wednesday that Phillip E. Rogers, 45, of Chicago has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of weapon by a felon in shooting on I-80 in New Lenox earlier this week.

On Nov. 25, at around 5:30 p.m., ISP responded to a 911 call of an expressway shooting on I-80 westbound entrance to I-355, police said. The preliminary investigation revealed two vehicles were involved in a road rage incident, and then crashed.

After the crash, Lenier Clayton, 30, was fatally shot, police said.

The suspect—now identified as Rogers—fled on foot, and was later located and taken into custody by New Lenox Police, officials said.

Family members on Tuesday started a GoFundMe to support funeral services for Clayton. As of Wednesday morning, it has raised more than $17,000.
