New Lenox Resident Loses $37K In Bitcoin Scam: Police

Police say the resident was contacted by someone claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury Department.

NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox resident was the victim of a scam and deposited more than $37,500 into a Bitcoin machine after being contacted by someone claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury Department, police said.

According to the Herald-News, the victim is a 79-year-old woman.

An officer responded Aug. 11 to the victim's home, where the resident said they were told that their information was stolen and used to open accounts. The caller convinced the victim to withdraw money from the bank and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine "to assist in resolving the issue," police said.

In total, the victim, deposited $37,560, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
