Property Tax Rebate Coming For Homeowners In Union SD81

The average rebate for a New Lenox property taxpayer in the school district will be about $2,700.

NEW LENOX, IL — New Lenox homeowners who live in Union School District 81 will get a property tax rebate for the seventh consecutive year, according to a news release from the school district.

Union SD81 is rebating 75 percent of its portion of property taxes back to homeowners. The total rebated to residents through this program is over $1.6 million.

The average rebate for a New Lenox homeowner in the school district is about $2,700, according to Union SD81 Superintendent Tim Baldermann.

“We are pleased to be able to reimburse homeowners a substantial portion of the property taxes they paid to the school district,” Baldermann said. “Although we are not legally required to do so, we believe this money should be returned to the taxpayers. Additionally, our families pay no registration fees, we provide one-to-one technology for our students and they all receive free breakfast and lunch."

Union SD81 received the highest financial rating possible in the state for the ninth straight year, according to the release.

The district had been on the State's Financial Watch List and performing in the bottom 10 percent academically of all schools in Illinois just 11 years ago. Now, students in the district posted the second highest ELA and math scores for all Will County schools, and performed in the top 10 percent of all schools in Illinois, according to the release.

“The Superintendent and Board of Education are pleased to provide a great education for our students while providing fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers," said Patrick Sweeney, president of the Union SD81 Board of Education.

Union SD81 serves students in parts of New Lenox and Joliet.
