Silver Cross Physician Says Aging Gracefully a Matter of Attitude and Fortitude
Dr. Abraham Thomas shares insights on the keys to aging with grace

As he gets older himself, Dr. Abraham Thomas said he is fascinated by the elderly people he sees in his practice who seem to age with grace.
“Like fine wines that get better with age, these individuals age well by accepting who they have become over time,” said Dr. Thomas, who specializes in Internal Medicine at Silver Cross Medical Group in Mokena.
And he believes he knows the secret to their “vintage.”

“Aging gracefully means finding purpose at every stage of life. For some, this may involve continuing careers, starting new ventures or engaging in creative pursuits. Others enjoy mentoring, traveling or giving back to their communities,” he said. “The key is to engage in activities that bring joy and meaning. Studies show that individuals who focus on what they can do – rather than lamenting what they cannot – enjoy greater satisfaction and emotional well-being as they age.”
Embracing who they have become provides a foundation for graceful aging, Dr. Thomas said.

“Every wrinkle, every gray hair tells a story of triumphs, challenges and memories made. Rather than resisting these changes, we should appreciate the beauty that comes with maturity, as well as the wealth of wisdom, experience, and beauty that life accumulates over time.”
Maintaining Physical Health is Key
Maintaining physical health is important to help offset the loss of mobility and balance that often comes with age and other age-related illnesses.
“Regular exercise tailored to one’s abilities helps preserve mobility, balance and energy. Nutrition is vital; diets rich in whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats support overall health and longevity,” he explained. “And adequate hydration and sleep are crucial in maintaining vitality.”
Preventive healthcare is especially important, including regular check-ups, screenings and appropriate vaccinations.
Challenging your mind and caring for your emotional health are also important, he added. Engaging in activities that stimulate the mind, such as learning a new language, solving puzzles, reading, or even taking up hobbies like painting or gardening, can keep cognitive abilities sharp.
“Human connections are necessary at every age but become even more essential in later years,” Dr. Thomas said. “Loneliness and isolation can negatively impact both mental and physical health. Aging gracefully involves nurturing relationships, whether through family, friends or community. Joining clubs, volunteering or attending events can foster a sense of belonging.”
Connections with younger generations bring fresh perspectives, energy and enthusiasm, he said, while older generations provide wisdom, experience and insight.
“These connections always enrich us.”
And don’t forget personal time, Dr. Thomas said, as it enriches the soul.
“The people I know who are aging gracefully also always take time for themselves. They make it a point to engage in spiritual reflection, meditation, faith and worship. Routines such as skincare, grooming, getting massages, reading, journaling, coloring and scrapbooking also bring about a sense of confidence and well-being.”
Aging gracefully, he said, means honoring our achievements, expressing gratitude for life’s blessings and acknowledging the lessons learned along the way.
“The poet Dylan Thomas wrote about growing old. ‘Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.’
“I would argue that we need to find our purpose as we go into that good night and let our attitude illuminate our way.”
