Where To Stay Cool In New Lenox When Temps Are Dangerous

Temperatures are expected to climb above 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday in New Lenox. Here's where to go to cool down.

NEW LENOX, IL — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday in New Lenox, with temperatures forecasted to top 100 degrees.

Two cooling centers will be available to New Lenox residents who need an escape from the dangerous heat.

The New Lenox Police Department, 200 Veterans Parkway, and the New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Parkway, are both open for those in need of a place to get cool.

Peak afternoon heat index values of 105 to 109 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperatures combined with high humidity may cause heat-related illness.

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
  • To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
