Woman, 26, Charged With DUI In Crash That Killed Passenger: ISP

The University Park woman was driving a car that struck a stalled vehicle and a semi, Illinois State Police said.

CHICAGO — A University Park woman has been charged in an April 6 crash that claimed the life of her passenger and injured several others, Illinois State Police said Wednesday.

Tamia D. Rios, 26, has been charged with felony driving under the influence after the three-vehicle crash on I-94 south and 87th Street, Illinois State Police said.

State police on April 6 investigated a three-vehicle fatal traffic crash. A truck tractor semi-trailer was slowing due to a stalled vehicle in the roadway. Rios, the driver of a bronze 2021 Buick, struck the semi and the stalled vehicle, according to police.

A passenger of the Buick—identified as 23-year-old Carlos Rios of Ithaca, New York—was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Rios, her two other passengers, and the driver of the stalled vehicle were transported to area hospitals with injuries.

On April 7, state police presented their case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Rios was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol involving death and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily harm.

Rios was arrested and held pending her first court appearance.
