Man Flees Police, Jumps Into Pond, Rescued And Arrested: Northbrook PD
Christian Alcala of Chicago faces felony charges after police said officers had to rescue him after he jumped into a pond and couldn't swim.
NORTHBROOK, IL — The Northbrook Police Department handled a number of criminal complaints over the past week involving a number of offenses.
Police also arrested Christian Alcala of Chicago at 2:03 a.m. on Thursday after police were called to the area of Dundee Road and Charlemagne Drive. Officers saw a 2011 Nissan traveling at a high rate of speed (68 mph in a 40-mph zone) and turned on their emergency lights. Police said the Nissan made an abrupt right turn and stopped. The driver, identified as Alcala, jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.
Police said that Alcala then jumped into a pond and as officers told him to return to shore, the suspect informed police he couldn’t swim. Officers said that Alcala went under the water before officers jumped into the water and saved him. After taking him into custody, police searched Alcala’s car and found a loaded handgun, marijuana, and a white substance which later tested positive as being cocaine.

Alcala was charged with a number of drug and weapons offenses, and resisting arrest and was cited for numerous traffic violations.

RECOVERED STOLEN VEHICLE
Officers were called to the 1100 block of Skokie Boulevard at 9:16 p.m. on July 27 where they found a 2023 blue Toyota Tundra that had been reported stolen. Officers found the vehicle unoccupied and were unable to find the offenders who police said had fled the area.
WARRANT SERVICE
Officers were called to the area of Shermer Road and Willow Road to search for defendant Edith Williams, who was wanted on a warrant. Police said that Williams had been seen driving in the area. Officers were able to locate her during a traffic stop and took her into custody on a warrant out of Lake County.
THEFT
Police were called to the 1100 block of Willow Road where the complainant said that someone had stolen her iPhone while she was at a wedding reception.
Police were called to the 800 block of Willow Road where the complainant said that a person questioned her about baby food while she was shopping. The complainant then found that her wallet was missing from her purse and the suspect fled on foot.
TRAFFIC CRASH
Police responded to the 700 block of Sanders Road where a 2020 white Hyundai had left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Police said that power lines had fallen on top of the vehicle and that the driver, Phillip M. Robbins of Glenview, was assisted in removing him from the vehicle. He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 5.
RETAIL THEFT
Police were called to the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road at 5:59 p.m. on July 31 where the staff at the store said that two unknown suspects stole three pairs of sunglasses and fled in a car.
IDENTITY THEFT
Police were called to the 2000 block of Sleepy Hollow where the complainant said that a person opened a Verizon Wireless account for two cell phones in his name. The complainant told police he has never had a Verizon account and did not authorize anyone to open the account.
DEATH INVESTIGATION
Police were called to the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard for the report of an unresponsive person. Life-saving measures were started but the person died of natural causes.
BATTERY/RETAIL THEFT
Police were called to the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard where officers saw a person attempting to steal several items after cutting the anti-theft sensors off of them. Store security attempted to stop the person but the suspect allegedly threatened the security officer and pushed them to the ground. The suspect fled in a blue SUV.
BURGLARY TO A VEHICLE
Police were called to the 900 block of Sunset Ridge Road where the complainant said she saw a person inside of her vehicle looking for items. The person yelled at the suspect who then walked toward another vehicle and attempted to escape with her wallet. The woman approached the vehicle and tried to take her wallet back, but the suspect drove off, knocking the woman to the ground before throwing her wallet out of the window, police said.
