Sex Offender Seen Loitering In Public Park: Northbrook Police Blotter

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

THEFT

Walter Posner, of Northbrook, is accused of theft, and was arrested at 4:04 p.m. July 27, in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road. Police said the owner of the business saw Posner digging up flowers in front of the business and stealing them on surveillance cameras. Police recognized Posner from past incidents and responded to his home. He had reportedly replanted the stolen flowers in front of his house and admitted to the crime. A court date of Aug. 18 was assigned.

SEX OFFENDER VIOLATION

Thomas LaRoasa, of Wheeling, is accused of unlawful sexual predator presence/loitering in a public park, and was arrested at 10:30 a.m. July 30, in the 1800 block of Walters Avenue. Police said LaRosa was seen walking through the park on July 7 with his family. A court date of Aug. 18 was assigned.

IMPROPER USE OF REGISTRATION

Dasaradha R. Pakanati, of Northbrook, is accused of improper use of registration, improper display of registration, failure to signal lane change, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 8:06 p.m. July 31. A court date of Sept. 17 was assigned.

INCIDENTS

ATTEMPTED COMMERCIAL BURGLARY

Police responded to a burglar alarm at 2:06 a.m. July 25, at a cellphone store in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found the front door window had been cracked but not broken through. The surveillance footage at the store showed two people exiting a vehicle and attempting to smash the front window with a piece of concrete before fleeing the area.

COMPUTER SCAM

An Adelaide Drive resident reported at 10:08 a.m. July 26, a screen had popped up on her computer indicating there was child pornography on it. The pop-up advised her to call a number for assistance with the matter. The complainant called the number and spoke to a person regarding removing the possible infected files. The person told the complainant to purchase 10 Sephora gift cards and provide the card numbers to them. The complainant followed the instructions and spent $250 on gift cards. After providing the person with the gift card numbers, the complainant then realized she was scammed.

FACEBOOK SCAM

An Illinois Road resident reported at 11:03 a.m. July 28, seeing an ad on Facebook for concert tickets on sale. The resident responded to the ad and sent online payments totaling $1,615. The seller never sent the tickets and refused to respond with the complainant. She realized later the ad was a scam.

THEFT

  • A citizen reported at 11:24 a.m. July 29, his corporate office in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard sent him a check every month for the office to have petty cash. When this last month's check did not arrive, they looked into the matter. It appeared the check was intercepted through the mail and cashed at an unknown location by forging the staff member's name. The total amount stolen was $744.95.
  • A resident in the 1400 block of Shermer Road reported at 1:12 p.m. July 30, she had guests at her apartment. The complainant went to bed while the guests were still there and when she woke, items were missing from her purse. The complainant said she is missing her prescription medication and a Samsung valued at $100. An officer attempted to contact the subjects, but had negative results.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Bermuda Dunes Place resident called police at 11:11 a.m. July 29, to report someone had fraudulently used his credit card online to purchase clothing and attempted to open a new credit card in the complainant’s name. The new credit card was supposed to be delivered to an address in Texas. The complainant was able to contact the credit company and cancel the card.
