Construction Underway for Bell's New Cafeteria, Science Lab
Workers broke ground Monday for the addition and renovations to Bell Elementary School at 3730 N. Oakley.
The makeover of Bell Elementary is officially underway, as construction on the school’s addition and renovation started earlier this week.
“We are excited to announce that the permits for our addition have been attained, so work will officially begin on Monday, May 13, 2013,” elementary representatives said on the school’s blog. “This marks the beginning of a very exciting time at Bell School.”
Construction includes the addition of a science lab, art and music rooms and a multipurpose cafeteria kitchen. Along with new facilities, the school’s library, gym and auditorium will be renovated.

The Public Building Commission and Chicago Public Schools expect to finish construction in February 2014.
To help with project costs, Ward. 47 Ald. Ameya Pawar secured about $10 million in funding. In 2009, Gov. Pat Quinn also approved a $29 billion state capital plan, which included money for the elementary school.

Once work is completed, Bell will be a more sustainable school, with recycled materials, green roofs and high efficiency heating and cooling.
