Health Inspectors Hit Jahn Elementary, Find Slip-Ups at Restaurants

Potential rodent harborage, rusty shelving and slow draining sinks are found when health inspectors hit up businesses in North Center.

Patch examined inspection reports in North Center. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants and businesses can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious violations. Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended.

All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins

  • 1755 W. Addison St.
  • Pass

Sitting right on the border of North Center and Lake View, the popular coffee, donut and ice cream shop near the corner of Addison Street and Lincoln Avenue only had two comments from inspectors. Employees were instructed to put a thermometer inside the deli display cooler as well as clean the floor inside the walk-in cooler and under all heavy equipment.

Lazzat

  • 2245 W. Irving Park Road
  • Pass

Health inspectors headed over to restaurant Lazzat only to find a few mistakes employees needed to remedy. First, all the peeling paint on the walls around the sinks and dishwashing area need to be scraped and repainted, and some raw wood needs to be sealed. That’s combined with a splash guard that should be installed between the sink and food-prep areas, as well as a self-closing device installed on the bathroom door.

Fast Super Burrito

  • 1924 W. Irving Park Road
  • Pass

Inspectors visited this local burrito joint recently, and a few notes were left on ways to improve. First, owners were advised to remove all the clutter from the food storage area to prevent rodent harborage. That’s combined with a slow-draining sink in the prep area and the ice machine scoop found to be stored inproperly.

Melao Latin Cuisine

  • 3941 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass

When visiting this restaurant with Latin flaire, inspectors found rusty shelving in the kitchen coolers and told the owners to repaint or replace them. They also told employees to put wiping cloths in a sanitary solution between uses, and to fix the broken light shields in the kitchen area.
