New $150K Billboard Will Loom Over Western Avenue

The expensive new sign will overlook the Western Avenue bridge, replacing one already there.

The Western Avenue bridge over the Chicago River sees plenty of daily traffic, and for the owners of a new billboard, that's a good thing.

The City of Chicago approved a building permit for Van Wagner Outdoor, a Chicago-based advertising company, to replace the existing billboard near the bridge with a new $150,000 sign.

Located approximately at 3023 N. Western Ave., the sign slated to come down is 14-feet tall by 48-feet wide.

While it’s unclear whether the new sign will be an LED billboard, Van Wagner was most recently in the news when they helped install a 41-foot by 72-foot LED display in Times Square, Manhattan.

The digital billboard issue in Chicago has been revving up as Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) has publically been fighting both the recent influx in mini-billboards, as well as Mayor Rahm Emanuel's expansive billboard privatization deal.
