Yoga Studio Flourishes in ‘Friendly Neighborhood’ (PHOTOS)

Family-owned Om on the Range Yoga Studio credits their long string of success to loyal neighbors after a complete career change 11 years ago.

When husband-and-wife duo Terry Kiely and Beth Range Kiely took the plunge as small business owners in 2001, it was no small decision.

“We both started out with regular jobs,” Kiely said. “I was in consulting, she was in fundraising with DePaul University. It was a drastic change.”

“It was funny,” Kiely continued. “We used to take these long walks and say, ‘What do you want to do when we retire?’ ‘Well, let’s open a little yoga studio,’ we thought. But the more we talked about it, the more we thought, ‘We could do that.’”

Just like that, Om on the Range was born. Named after Beth’s maiden name, Range, the yoga studio sits at 3759 N. Ravenswood Ave. on the border between Lake View and Northcenter.

It’s a location both near and dear to the couple who lives in Roscoe Village with their two young boys, ages 9 and 10, who attend Bell Elementary School. Opening a business in the community they live in is what Kiely thinks makes Om on the Range different, and what makes it such a success.

“We live in the community,” Kiely said. “We live in Roscoe village over at Cornelia and Wolcott, so we’re very much involved in the community. Our kids go to Bell School over here, we go to St. Andrews Church right over there, so I live my whole life, really, in a circle around here. It’s a real friendly neighborhood, and I think what makes us so successful is that we’re just regular people.”

Om on the Range—which Kiely says sports a generally older clientele, as well as more males than usual—employs 10 other people at the space on Ravenswood. In addition, the style of yoga is more athletic, making sure people sweat in their almost 95-degree yoga room.

But not every class is geared toward the master poser. In an effort to show that yoga is for everyone, Kiely and his wife are experimenting with new types of classes.

“I’m doing my ‘Yoga for Golfers’ this Saturday, which won’t be like a typical class. I was going to call it ‘Yoga for Stiff Guys,’ but thought it might be a turnoff,” Kiely laughed. “It’s really designed for guys who usually wouldn’t come to yoga, and you know, golf and yoga have a lot of similarities.”

Residents interested in checking out the family-owned yoga studio can check out Om on the Range’s website for its schedule. The first week for new students is $20, where drop-in classes are $15. In addition, the studio offers 60, 75 or 90 minute classes.
