1 Dead After Drunk Driver Drove Wrong Way Down I-57, Police Said

The man, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday morning. The driver of the other car was cited for drunk driving, police said.

OAK FOREST, IL — A 30-year-old man is dead after police said his car was hit by a drunk driver early Saturday morning on Interstate 57.

According to Illinois State Police, a man was driving a maroon GMC Envoy the wrong way down the northbound lane of I-57 near 157th Street when he hit a black Buick head on.

The driver of the Buick was pronounced dead at the scene at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the man's name is being withheld while officials notify family members but did identify him as 30 years old, Black and from the South Side of Chicago.

The driver of the GMC Envoy was identified as Anthony Washington, 32. Washington was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later issued citations for driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to reduce speed, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and operating an uninsured vehicle that caused bodily harm.

A portion of northbound I-57 was shut down from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. while police and emergency personnel cleared the scene.
