The City of Oak Forest is committed to encouraging residents, businesses and institutions to reduce energy consumption and install solar energy systems. Renewable energy, such as solar, makes our community more energy efficient and saves the community and residents funds.

A building permit is required for the installation of photovoltaic solar systems and the permit documentation such as, application, fees and requirements. Over the last few years, the city has seen a substantial increase in the number of building permits obtained for the installation of solar panels. Solar panels are permitted from a zoning perspective.  This is as long as they meet the intent and definition of an accessory structure and to a principal use, such as a residence, business or institution.
