According to the group, the girl was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, and has been hospitalized for most of the past four months. She has suffered from strokes and a brain infection. Her family plans to bring her home this weekend.

Her wish? A TV. And Project Fire Buddies is raising funds to her buy one.

Project Fire Buddies was started three years ago by firefighter Kurt DeGroot and his colleagues. They aim to bring cheer to the children in Oak Forest they've transported to hospitals for serious injuries. The group keeps an eye on these kids as they grow up. The group also holds an annual backpack drive for the city's students. One a buddy, always a buddy, DeGroot has said.
