Garbage Truck's Payload Catches Fire Near Camp Sullivan

The Oak Forest Fire Department isn't sure why the truck's contents ignited Thursday afternoon.

OAK FOREST, IL β€” A garbage truck caught fire Thursday near Camp Sullivan after the contents of its payload ignited, according to the Oak Forest Fire Department. The fire happened around 1 p.m. while the Tri-State Disposal truck was on Oak Park Avenue, near Conway Court.

According to Deputy Chief Tim Moss, the truck's payload contained normal household items. It's not clear how or why those materials caught fire, he added.

In order to put out the fire, the truck's contents needed to dumped out so the fire could be extinguished, Moss said. Oak Forest firefighters also received helped from the Orland Park Fire Department. No fire hydrants are in that area, and firefighters needed to shuttle water to put out the blaze, the deputy chief said.

Because of that, Oak Park Avenue needed to be briefly shut down while crews fought the fire. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, Moss said.
