OAK FOREST, IL — Oak Forest's Animal Control facility will now bear the name of one of its greatest supporters.

On Tuesday, April 9, the Oak Forest City Council recognized the life and legacy of former First Ward Alderwoman Laura Gray by dedicating the Animal Control facility in her memory. Mayor Kuspa presented the plaque that will be affixed to the outside of the building to her husband Terry, officials said Wednesday.

"A passionate public servant and animal lover, Laura was instrumental in establishing the Friends of Animal Control group to provide rescue and re-homing of unclaimed and abandoned animals, improve facility conditions, and educate the community in responsible pet ownership and care," officials said. "She also sponsored numerous city ordinances for the betterment of animals and supported many local animal rescue groups throughout her life."

Gray, 62, served as alderwoman of the city's First Ward for 15 years. She died in February following a battle with cancer. Gray was known for her passion for rescue work and love of animals. Gray first began serving Oak Forest as a volunteer with the city’s Animal Control program.

"Animal rescue was Laura's true passion in life," officials said. "Her desire to help all living creatures never lessened, even as her illness progressed. Nothing made Laura happier than snuggling with her pets.
