Oak Forest Police To Test Audio System For Detecting Gunshots
The system will be able to detect gunshots, glass breakage and squealing tires, officials said.
OAK FOREST, IL — As another step in combating crime in Oak Forest, police will soon roll out an audio detection system in an area equivalent to one-square mile along the city’s main corridors. The system will be able to detect gunshots, glass breakage and squealing tires, officials said in a release.
In total, 64 units will be installed at no cost to the police department as part of a one-year, trial program offered by Flock Safety, a public safety operating system that helps law enforcement agencies in thousands of communities work together to stop crime.
"We are always looking for ways to use the latest technology to fight crime and ensure the safety of our residents," said Deputy Chief Scott Durano.

"Combining this technology with the license plate readers, will enable us to respond more quickly, preserve critical evidence, and clear more cases. In most instances, we will be aware of incidents before residents can report them."
In February, the police department installed 17 Flock Safety automated license plate reading cameras in specific areas of town.

By utilizing both systems, police officers will be able to direct their efforts near the source of these audio signatures to identify potential suspects more efficiently as well as identify vehicles that have been involved with criminal activity, according to a release.
