OFPD Dispatcher In for a Close Shave at St. Baldrick's

For Oak Forest police dispatcher Amy Henion, it's hair today, gone tomorrow—or more accurately, gone March 9, as Henion is one of 64 people signed up to sit under the clippers and shave her head for a St. Baldrick's event at Gaelic Park.

Henion, who said she is an active donor to charities, decided it was time to take the next step and actually participate in an event.

“It's funny actually, I usually donate, but I decided I want to participate and so I just decided I'm going to be a shavee this year,” she said.

It's something she "just decided to do.

“Seven or eight months ago, I just decided to do it,” she said. “Then I said it out loud, so now I have to do it.”

With the full support of the Oak Forest Police Department, many of whom have already donated money to Henion's mission, she said she's more excited than nervous for the big day to finally arrive.

“My coworkers are super-supportive, they've been making donations and teasing me about it,” she said. “Some of them are coming out to watch. My family has been super supportive, too.

"It's easier now, I think I was more nervous a couple weeks ago, now I've worked through it. No matter what it's going to happen, so I'm 100 percent in.”

Despite the cold and snow hovering over the area, Henion has no plans to cover up. 

“My intention is to wear it proud, no hats, no wigs,” she said. I'm just going to wear it proud.”
