Oak Lawn Spartan Bowlers Capture Fifth Straight Conference Title, On To The IHSA Regional

Oak Lawn Community High School boys bowling team starts its run to post-season glory Friday, Jan. 16, at Palos Lanes in IHSA Sectional.

OAK LAWN, IL — Friday was the day, Palos Lanes was the venue, and a fifth-straight South Suburban Conference Red Championship was the mission for the Oak Lawn Community High School boys bowling team. When pins settled, the Spartans accomplished the mission at hand and took home the title for the fifth year in a row.

The team had the top three bowlers of the tournament. Justin Canvin finished first, Charlie Dell was second, and Peter Garcia was third. David Bush finished 13th, and Decimus Pecina finished 14th, both just missed earning all-conference honors.

The junior varsity also won the conference tournament and had four bowlers finish in the Top 10. They overcame a 173-pin deficit in the last game to defeat Reavis and head home with the trophy. Zach Shane bowled a perfect 300 game in Game 1 and finished first (on both levels) knocking down an impressive 1,319 pins. Ethan Aguinaga was third, Jose Zavala was fourth, and Patrick Lambert was tied for ninth.

“I am super proud of both teams, but I feel like we still have a few things to prove at the Illinois High School Association Regional and Sectional this year,” OLCHS head coach Kevin Walery said.

The Spartans begin the postseason march to glory this weekend as they will take part in the IHSA Regional tournament at Palos Lanes this Friday.
