Engine Fire Forces Southwest Jet to Abort Takeoff at Midway

No injuries reported among the 140-plus passengers.


A Southwest Airlines flight departing Midway Airport for Boston late Wednesday was reportedly forced to abort takeoff due to engine trouble.

Flight 3299 was scheduled for a 10:10 p.m. takeoff and due to arrive at 1:15 a.m. at Boston Logan International Airport. The engine overheated and caught fire, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

A local news photographer tweeted an image of the jet at Midway surrounded by Chicago Fire Department emergency vehicles. An EMS Plan 1 was issued, with six ambulances and fire trucks responding. The fire department checked out 144 passengers, who were returned to the terminal by bus, and no injuries were reported between 11 p.m. and midnight.
