Coroner Reveals Scheidegger had Alcohol in his System During Fatal Crash

A Carroll County official confirmed results of a blood-alcohol test, following Carl Sandburg High School Athletic Director Bruce Scheidegger's death about three months ago.

Bruce Scheidegger was over the legal limit for alcohol when he was killed in a car accident about three months ago, according to a Sun Times Media report.

Carroll County Chief Deputy Coroner Chris Martin said a toxicology report showed Scheidegger had alcohol in his system at the time of the fatal accident, but did not confirm a specific blood-alcohol level, according to the media report.

Carl Sandburg High School’s beloved athletic director attended an IHSA state bowling tournament on Feb. 9, and later was driving on Loran Road north of Mt. Carroll in northwestern Illinois when his car left the road. He was the only person in the car, and no other vehicles were involved. Scheidegger was 54.

Scheidegger’s death left a sudden and deeply felt impact on the Sandburg community, with hundreds attending a tribute for him in February.

“If alcohol played a role in this tragic event, perhaps Bruce’s final teachable moment to us all is that one decision can have tragic consequences. We continue to keep all who care for Bruce in our thoughts,” said Consolidated High School District 230 Superintendent James Gay in a statement to Sun Times Media.
