Firefighters Arrive At Burning Orland Home Before Owner Calls 911

The firefighters on-duty at the 143rd Street station could smell smoke coming from a home a block away.

ORLAND PARK, IL — The firefighters at Station 5 in Orland Park were at the scene of a nearby house fire before the owner was able to call 911 Saturday afternoon.

Crew members at the station at 8851 W. 143rd St. were working on routine exercises inside the firehouse around 2:50 p.m. when they smelled something burning outside, Orland Fire Protection District spokesman Ray Hanania said in an email.

After rushing outside, the firefighters saw smoke coming from a home in the 9000 block of Kathy Court, just one block west of the firehouse, and they arrived at the home just as the owner was calling 911 to report the fire.

All three residents of the home, and all family pets, were able to escape the fire. They were treated for smoke inhalation but were reported in good condition as none were hospitalized.

The fire was coming from the home's attached garage, and brought under control within five minutes, Hanania said. Fire crews from Palos and Tinley Park helped Orland firefighters put out the blaze.
