Orland Park To Offer Special Material Waste Pick Up

Starting next year, Village residents will be able to request pick up of certain materials that regular pick up doesn't include. Here's how.

ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Park residents are about to have an easier time getting rid of certain unwanted special materials, according to a release from the village. Starting Jan. 1, 2019, contractor Waste Management will begin “At Your Door Special Collection Service."

“This is a great service for the residents of the village,” said Trustee Kathy Fenton, chair of the village’s Public Works Committee, the release says. “In the past, people have had to hunt for collections to properly dispose of these things and now they’ll be picked up at their homes.”

Here's how it works. Once you make a request (information below), you'll be mailed a disposal kit, which includes a large plastic bag. Just put the items that will fit into the bag and leave them outside your door on the scheduled date. Big items that won't fit needn't be bagged.

The release says they'll be able to take items like:

  • Paints
  • Household cleaners
  • Compact florescent lamps
  • Automotive products
  • Garden chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Electronics

To request the service, visit the Waste Management At Your Door webpage and complete a form or call 800-449-7587 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The program is for residents only, not businesses.

“All village residents are receiving post cards this week describing what’s accepted and what’s not,” said Public Works Director John Ingram. “Any hazardous materials that we can keep out of landfills is a benefit to the environment. The process is easy, after scheduling online or within a few days of the call, a disposal kit will be mailed to residents.”

They won't take everything, however. This includes:

  • Biological waste
  • Appliances
  • Ammunition
  • Asbestos
  • Medicines
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Radioactive materials
