By educating community members on disaster preparedness and response, CERT volunteers become critical assets, helping to enhance local emergency readiness and build community resilience.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates community members on disaster preparedness and response, empowering residents to assist themselves and their neighbors before, during, and after emergencies. Trained volunteers can significantly enhance local emergency preparedness and community resilience.

Orland Township, with a population of nearly 100,000, will greatly benefit from a CERT program through:

- Trained Volunteers: Creating a dedicated group ready to assist during disasters and community events.

- Emergency Readiness: Providing support when professional responders are overwhelmed.

- Community Engagement: Fostering strong relationships and a shared commitment to safety.

- Assistance for Vulnerable Populations: Conducting wellness checks and managing resources during emergencies.

Support from Cook County EMRS

- Training Delivery: Cook County EMRS is to provide the 21-hour Basic CERT curriculum, including a two-hour final exercise.

- Instructor and Logistics Support: Assistance in planning and executing training sessions is provided.

- Administrative Coordination: Collaboration with township leaders to ensure a successful CERT launch.

Training Class Details

We are planning our first training class in September, structured as follows:

- Schedule: One evening per week for eight weeks from 6 PM to 9 PM.

- Meals: Dinner will be provided at each class.

- Eligibility: Open to individuals 18 years and older who live or work in Orland Township.

- Volunteer Opportunities: Graduates will be offered volunteer positions with the CERT group, assisting with traffic control, community events, and emergency deployments.

Engagement Opportunities

- Volunteer Roles: Opportunities include assisting at local events and participating in emergency drills and outreach.

- Regional Collaboration: CERT members can support each other across Cook County during large-scale emergencies.

- Advanced Training Access: Active CERT members can participate in specialized training sessions provided by Cook County.
