Orland Woman, Sandwich Shop Owner Lowballed Income On Taxes: US Atty.

A 64-year-old Orland Park woman who owned Smiley's Gyros and Beef in Plainfield underreported her business' income, authorities said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A 64-year-old Orland Park woman who formerly owned a Plainfield sandwich shop is accused of tax fraud, after authorities said she lowballed her business' income by more than $700,000 over three years.

Heyam P. Malick, 64, who authorities say owned and was the only employee of Smiley's Gyros and Beef at 15925 Illinois Rte 59 in Plainfield, knowingly filed the false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service from 2016 to 2020, misrepresenting her income by $725,000, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois.

The charge of tax fraud carries a possible sentence of up to three years in federal prison on each count.

Smiley's, which appeared to be open on Tuesday, has over 600 largely positive Google reviews and offers gyros, burgers, sandwiches and subs, tacos and burritos, beef sandwiches and more.

Patch has confirmed that Malick hasn’t owned Smiley’s since 2021. The business is now owned by the Manderscheid family, and remains open for business.
