Orland's Emergency Alert System Hacked, Personal Info Could Be Leaked: Village

The Village warned residents of the security breach Monday.

ORLAND PARK, IL — Village officials on Monday warned residents of a security breach in its third-party emergency alert system, which might have compromised residents' personal information.

The Village was notified that a cybercriminal group targeted the CodeREd system, which caused disruption and may have compromised some user data, the Village said. The incident did not affect any Village systems or services, officials said, and remains isolated to the CodeRED software.

The data includes basic contact information for CodeRED users—such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and passwords used to create CodeRED accounts. If you used the same password for CodeRED that you use for any other account, the Village recommends changing those passwords immediately. Because CodeRED does not collect financial information from users, there is no impact to any financial data.

CodeRED has informed the Village that while there are indications that data was taken from the system, at this time, there is no evidence that this information has been posted online. It potentially could be leaked in the future, the Village said.

"While the Village’s CodeRED account has been decommissioned, staff is working with the vendor to migrate to a new emergency alert platform," the Village said. "Please know that protecting your personal information is our highest priority, and we are committed to safeguarding your data by working with vendors who provide secure, reliable systems."
