ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Park residents waiting to get their hands on a classic Chicago sweet treat don't have much longer to go.

A new, standalone location of The Original Rainbow Cone coming to Orland Park will open in late-May, the company said in a release Thursday. A rendering of the location shows a drive-thru and colorful, shaded outdoor seating area at the 15711 Harlem Ave. location. The iconic Rainbow Cone signage will hang above the door. The standalone location marks the third to open in the Chicagoland area, the company said.

The ice cream hotspot will offer the much-loved, 5-flavor-stacked Original Rainbow Cone, along with sundaes, shakes, made-to-order donuts and other desserts.

Never had a Rainbow Cone? It was created in 1926 by "Grandpa Joe" Sapp, who "was never satisfied with just one ice cream flavor and instead stacked five delicious options on a single cone for a one-of-a-kind culinary classic," the company said. They still stack the same flavors today: orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House, strawberry, and chocolate.

An ice cream staple for 95 years, The Original Rainbow Cone's roots are in the South Side Chicago neighborhood Beverly, where families have pulled up to the classic, pink-coated building that attracts crowds practically lined up out the door. The brand has since expanded to kiosks and trucks throughout the Chicago area and launched a franchise partner program in 2022 with franchise locations in Florida, Nashville and other regions, according to the company.

"The passion for Rainbow Cone's flavors, history, and legacy has carried its tradition for nearly a century at our original southside Chicago location," said Lynn Sapp, third-generation owner of The Original Rainbow Cone. "For our Rainbow Cone family to see this continue to new communities, and Grandpa Joe's continued success, is an incredible joy. He would have been elated."

A grand opening event will be planned for the new location, including giveaways, and other festivities. Stay tuned for an exact opening date.
