The Rundown, Nov. 28 to Dec. 4: Politics vs. Crime vs. Sports

Arrests and court cases rival big changes in state law and a new leader in an area school district, as we take a look back at the week.

As Orland Park Patch inches closer to three months since launch, changes in state laws and the loss of a sports icon happened along side a new school district superintendent, more taxing decisions and crime.

Civil unions and pension reform passed the Illinois General Assembly, and a new District 146 superintendent was chosen.  Orland Hills' newest trustee Kyle Hastings II sat down with us to talk about his path to the village's board, while Kirby decided on their tax request to the county.

Speaking of taxes, Orland Township Assessor Rich Kelly submitted our very first letter to the editor and gave the state a piece of his mind about the tax equalizer.

Mokena teen Keith T. Randulich pleaded guilty to killing his sister in 2009.  Palos Park resident and veterinarian Dr. Gary Friederich was accused of not reporting dog fighting.

In sports, the entire Chicago area, whether south or north, all felt a great loss in the passing of Cubs great Ron Santo. Patch sports writer Paul Johnson described in vivid detail how Santo inspired him to pursue sports writing. During a visit to High Point Elementary, White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen expressed his own remorse at Santo's passing.

One of our own sports heroes received a national honor. Lexi Bryant, catcher for the Eagles softball team was recognized by ESPN as a RISE All-American.  While playing she remains an inspiration to her teammates.

Patch reporter Jesse Marx took an in-depth look at Moraine Valley Community College's international program through its growth and how the students adapt to life here. Our health guru Tina Tuszynski gave us helpful advice on how to stay healthy during the holidays. Patch arts aficionado Myra Eder pointed us in the direction of a quirky holiday performance in Orland Park, as well as other area fun.
