OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police released new information and a timeline for the stabbing attacks that left one man dead at a Chick-fil-A restaurant and a second man seriously injured.

Earlier, police said the preliminary investigation suggested the attacker, a man, stabbed the first victim just after 3 a.m. Wednesday and the second nearly two hours later, at about 5 a.m. The restaurant typically opens at 6:30 a.m., and no Chick-fil-A employees were present at the time of the attacks, according to police.

In an update issued Wednesday evening, police said that based on surveillance video timestamps, the first victim, a man who was working as a delivery driver, was attacked inside the restaurant at around 3:10 a.m.

Police say the driver was inside the Chick-fil-A at 2740 Route 34 when they believe the suspect broke through a back door to gain entry, then attacked the delivery driver and killed him. His identity is being withheld pending formal identification by the Kendall County Coroner’s Office.

The second victim, a man who was working as a contracted maintenance worker, was outside the restaurant when the suspect attacked him just before 5 a.m., according to police.

A witness who saw the attack called police, "and together with the victim subdued the offender until police arrived" within four minutes of being dispatched, officials said in a news release.

"We are grateful for the actions of these two individuals, whose efforts to restrain the offender and call police directly led to the offender’s capture," police said in a statement.

When officers arrived, the suspected attacker was placed in custody, and officers began administering medical aid to the injured victim until members of the Oswego Fire Protection District arrived and took over care. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition Wednesday evening, police said.

Police found the first victim inside the restaurant after conducting "a protective sweep" based on statements made by the suspect, officials said. Paramedics attempted to help the unresponsive man before he was pronounced dead at the restaurant.

As a precautionary measure, police said unclaimed property found close to the scene was inspected by the Kane County Bomb Squad and determined not to be a threat to public safety.

The Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force responded to assist with the investigation and processing of the scene.

Investigators said they believe the incident was isolated. Police are still investigating a motive for the attacks and are working with the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine criminal charges, officials said.

As of late Wednesday morning, the website listed the Oswego Chick-fil-A as temporarily closed.
