Armed Robbery, Canine Unit Used In Investigation: Oswego Police

A man was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money in Oswego on Tuesday, Dec. 18, police said, during an internet currency transaction.

OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Police Department responded to reports of an armed robbery on the 100 block of Willowwood Drive North on Tuesday, Dec. 17 shortly before 8:30 p.m. The victim told police they had agreed to meet with the suspect to complete an internet transaction. Police have not disclosed what the nature of that transaction was.

The suspect allegedly produced a gun and took the victim's money when they met; the police report said the suspect then fled the scene. Oswego PD Public Information Officer Cathy Nevara said investigators are not releasing how much money was stolen at this time.

As part of the investigation, the Aurora Police Department lent the Oswego PD use of their canine unit. Nevara said utilization of a canine unit was not normal procedure in all armed robberies.

"If we can do a track and if we're hoping that that might help us in an investigation, yeah, we'll use [a canine unit]... In every situation, it obviously depends," she said.

When asked why this particular robbery required use of a canine unit, she responded, "We probably thought we would have success because the offender was on foot."
