D308 Teachers Should Be Part Of 'Planning For Changes': OEA
The Oswego Education Association is asking the board and the district to include teachers in the discussions about bringing students back.
OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Education Association is asking the district to include teachers in the discussions about reopening schools and bringing students back for in-person learning. During the Monday Board of Education meeting, Elizabeth Palatine, co-president, spoke to the board via Zoom.
"We strongly believe that teachers should be part of the planning for changes to the school day, as our highly trained and dedicated teachers bring unique experiences and insight that can help ensure both safety and learning needs are met to the highest degree possible for all learners," Palatine said.
She said all learners need access to the time, opportunity, and attention they need to make the most of what they are "working to become."

"2020 was like no other year in our lifetime, and the new year begins with us continuing to adapt to ever-evolving circumstances and events," she said. "Teaching, learning, and every other aspect of life, including in-person board meetings continue to be in flux. It predicts to be a dark winter, but hope for a return to normalcy is on the horizon with a vaccine seemingly within reach."
During the meeting, the board approved a revised reopening plan that will see students engaged in hybrid learning for longer hours during the day and for more number of days throughout the week.

"Teachers in our community have worked hard to innovate, connect, and educate students in a very different environment, working tirelessly to provide the best opportunities for our students," Palatine said. "All teachers want to be back in person, teaching, interacting, and helping students in the classroom we set up to be welcoming and comforting."
She said the Oswego Education Association supports students returning in person, as long as the guidelines set forth by the IDPH, CDC, and the approved district safety plan can be followed and maintained.
“Staff and student safety must remain a priority, and following and enforcing these guidelines as more students return is essential," Palatine said. "The OEA believes all learners, onsite and remote, deserve the chance to benefit from equal education resources and opportunities.”
