At about 4:56 a.m., Sergio and Ana, two maintenance workers, were outside the business when Lee exited the fast-food chain and stabbed Sergio from behind with a knife, Patch reported. Police believe Lee, of Kankakee, remained in the restaurant, attempting to clean up the crime scene.

After a round of applause from village officials and audience members at the Village Board meeting, President Ryan Kauffman read a proclamation further recognizing Sergio and Ana for their actions that "exemplify strength, courage and character that defines this community."

"Instead of succumbing to his injuries, Sergio fought back against the suspect with the help of his mother, Ana," the proclamation reads, adding they "ensured the safety of our community by preventing the suspect from escaping and inflicting further harm to others and the responding officers."
