Oswego Department Store Clerk Alerts Cops To Phone Scammers

A savvy clerk caught on when the Aurora couple purchased a high-value gift card Oct. 16.

AURORA, IL — An elderly Aurora couple gave around $6,000 to a caller claiming to be their grandson's lawyer. On Oct. 16, the scammer convinced them to buy gift cards and read the card numbers over the phone in order to pay for court costs. A clerk at an Oswego department store caught on and called the police. Officials say this type of scam is not at all uncommon.
