Oswego Senior Center To Suspend All Group Activities

At the urging of the Illinois Department on Aging, the Senior Center will be halting all group activities in which coronavirus could spread

OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Senior Center announced Wednesday that it will be halting all of its normal group functions in order to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection among the elderly. Starting Thursday, March 12, the senior center's congregate meal program, group activities and all classes will suspended until further notice. The decision to suspend these activities comes at the urging of the Illinois Department on Aging, which is requesting local elderly-care agencies to halt social functions.

"The Illinois Department on Aging is requesting all Area Agencies on Aging to immediately suspend all gathering activities placing our older adults at heightened risk," the announcement on the center's website read, "including congregate meals and social activities conducted in group settings..."

The decision also came after Governor J.B. Pritzker officially declared a state of emergency in Illinois over COVID-19 concerns. To date, there have been 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in Illinois, and the World Health Organization recently declared the viral infection a pandemic. This refers to the virus' geographic spread into over 100 countries, but not to its severity.
