Oswego State Championship Game Gets Rescheduled: See When, Where

The game will no longer happen at Illinois State University in Normal due to a scheduling conflict at the school, the IHSA said.

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego High School's state championship game against Chicago's Mount Carmel High School has a rescheduled date at a new field, the Illinois High School Association announced.

Four state title matches on Saturday, including Oswego's, were originally scheduled at Illinois State University in Normal. IHSA announced the day after Thanksgiving that the games would be postponed after the university closed its campus due to an impending winter storm, which subsequently broke the record for the snowiest November day ever recorded in Chicago, Patch reported.

The Class 5A and 6A games, which were first scheduled to be played Saturday morning, will be played at ISU at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, respectively. The final two games — for 7A and 8A — will happen the next day, though at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The Oswego Panthers, 11-2, will face the Mount Carmel Caravans, 13-0, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"Illinois State was committed to hosting all eight state championship games if possible, but could not host the 7A and 8A title games until Thursday due to a scheduling conflict on Wednesday," IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. "We did not want to further impact the schedules and routines of our competing teams, so NIU's willingness to step up, especially given the geography of the competing teams, made this an easy decision."

IHSA is working with the ticketing groups at ISU and NIU and anticipates that all tickets previously purchased through the ISU ticket office will be honored in DeKalb.

IHSA previously hosted the state title games at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, but a bi-annual scheduling conflict arose, and NIU stepped in, hosting all eight matches in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. After the contracts in Champaign and DeKalb ended in 2022, the IHSA Board decided to return the title games to ISU — which hosted title games from 1974 to 1998 — due in part to its central location.

Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A championship games were held Friday at ISU's Hancock Stadium.
