Streator Man Charged In 2021 Montgomery Fatal Shooting: Police

MONTGOMERY, IL – A 43-year-old Streator man is in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a 2021 fatal shooting in Montgomery, police announced on Thursday.

Rodolfo Madrigal was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals on Wednesday after investigative leads led police to the Streator man being linked to the fatal shooting. He was located at the intersection of South Sterling and Livingston in Streator on Wednesday and was taken into custody without incident, Montgomery Police said.

Madrigal was charged in a fatal shooting that took place on Jan. 12, 2021, when police responded to a report of shots fired from a vehicle that was located on Route 30 near Route 31. Police found a male victim who had been shot multiple times and who later died at an area hospital. The man was later identified as 29-year-old Andrew Contreras of Aurora.

Police said that an unidentified person had fired shots from another vehicle and fled the scene before police arrived.

For nearly two years, the Montgomery Police Department investigated the fatal shooting, pursuing leads that ultimately led to Madrigal's arrest on Wednesday. In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Madrigal faces an attempted murder charge.

Madrigal is being held in the Kane County Jail pending a detention hearing. The case remains open, and the investigation continues as the Montgomery Police Department and other partnering agencies work to determine any additional individuals involved.
