Use Of Force By Oswego Police Adheres To Federal, State Laws
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies said the OPD meets the U.S. Department of Justice's Standards of Certification.
OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Police Department has met the U.S. Department of Justice’s Standards of Certification under a 2020 Presidential Executive Order on Safe Policing for Safe Communities, according to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The village police in a press release said by obtaining the certification, the department has demonstrated that their use of force policies and procedures adhere to all applicable federal, state and local laws.
The department’s policies and practices in relation to several additional areas such as the department’s prohibition on chokeholds except in situations of deadly force, de-escalation protocols, duty to intervene to prevent excessive force and providing appropriate medical care when needed were reviewed and found to meet the standards.

Presidential Executive Order 13929 requires that all state, local, and university law enforcement agencies be certified by independent credentialing agencies such as CALEA. This federal certification allows the Oswego Police Department to be eligible to receive federal funding from the DOJ grant-making components.
