West Nile Virus Detected In 2 Kendall County Mosquito Traps

Kendall County health officials said they are seeing a spread of West Nile virus in both mosquitoes and humans in northern Illinois.

KENDALL COUNTY, IL — Two mosquito traps in Kendall County have been detected positive for West Nile virus, the county health department said Monday.

The batches were located in Oswego and Yorkville, officials said.

So far this year, three people have contracted the virus, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The most recent case was discovered in July in a 50-year-old Glen Ellyn woman, Patch reported.

The virus has been confirmed in humans, mosquitoes or animals in 44 counties, with 1,521 mosquito batches testing positive so far, the IDPH reported in its West Nile virus tracker.

  1. Defend yourself by wearing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-approved bug spray.
  2. Drain all standing water on your property to stop the breeding of mosquitoes.
  3. Dress in long sleeves and pants to cover your skin while enjoying the outdoors at dawn and dusk — this is when mosquitoes are most active.
